Stiles’ Ontario NDP will make the 407 toll-free

BRAMPTON – Marit Stiles, Ontario NDP leader, announced that an Ontario NDP government will take tolls off the 407 for all drivers. Stiles’ plan will save commuters across the Greater Toronto Area time and money.

Stiles was joined by Team Brampton candidates Martin Singh (Brampton East) and Ruby Zaman (Brampton North).

“Drivers here in Brampton and across the GTA are stuck paying the highest tolls in North America thanks to bad deals made by Conservative governments of the past, and defended by Ford’s Conservatives today,” said Stiles. “As your next Premier, I will make the 407 toll-free, put money back in your pockets, and get you home to your loved ones faster.”

“Doug Ford has sat on his hands as tolls on the 407 have gone up, afraid to take on the private corporation that makes millions from people just trying to get to work. I will negotiate on the side of the people, get us out of this bad deal, and make the 407 toll-free.

“Over the next few weeks, we have the opportunity to turn the page on Doug Ford and his bad deals and win a government that’s on your side.”

Background:

  • On day 1, Stiles’ government will remove tolls for trucks on Hwy 407 to reduce congestion on Hwy 401 and remove tolls on the provincially owned portion of the highway.
  • In the first 100 days, Stiles’ government will open negotiations with 407ETR to
  • remove tolls for all vehicles on the 407, saving commuters thousands of dollars.
  • In 2021, the 407ETR operators faced $1 billion in fines from the provincial government for failing to reduce tolls and maintain minimum traffic flow. But instead of enforcing the agreement, the Ford government inexplicably waived these fines.
  • The 407 ETR raised tolls again as much as 14 cents more per kilometre at the beginning of this year.
  • Ontario NDP fought to successfully remove tolls on Highway 412 and 418.
